This is the pad where astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee lost their lives in a tragic fire on January 27, 1967 during a training exercise. The accident led to a complete redesigning of the Apollo Command Module. The new design flew for the first time on the Apollo 7 mission on October 11, 1968
